World Breastfeeding Week

August 1st-7th is World Breastfeeding Week. In honor of the occasion, I'm posting an original poem and complimentary art.

Your mouth opens
wide, waiting, goldfish-like.
If I am too slow with clasp and hook, you howl—
Bless the Lord for clothes with easy access!

Your lower lip flips
smartly, suckling with soft sighs, content.
We settle in, leaving each enriched—
The curve of your ear imprinted on my arm.
